Shakti Dance Company

The performing division of Shakti is the
Shakti Dance Company.  All performing members have had several years of training and have completed their arangetram.  Several of Viji's senior students are performing artists in the Shakti Dance Company.  The average dance experience of the Shakti Dance Company members is 10 to 15 years .  World class dancers from India, US, Malayasia and other parts of the world are part of the Shakti Dance Company. Shakti Orchestra comprising of members from India and the USA provide musical accompaniment for all Shakti Dance Company performances. 


The Shakti Dance Company comprising of 25 to 30 dancers, musicians and technical staff  have had seven major National tours of the US.  The National tour comprised of
Meera in 1993, Shyama in 1997 and Bhagvad Gita in 2002, 2003 and 2004. The national tour of Prince to Buddha in 2005 and Shiva- Shakti in 2006. The Bhagvad Gita dance ballet, conceived and choreographed by Viji Prakash, commemorates the Silver Jubilee of the Shakti Dance Company and the Shakti School of Bharata Natyam.


In addition, there have been several US, Europe, and India tours comprising of a smaller group of dancers and musicians. Since 1985, the
Shakti Dance Company has been invited to perform in the Music and Dance Festival season in Chennai, India.   In 2000, Mythili Prakash was the recipient of the MGR Award for the "Best Dancer" from the Music Academy, Chenai, India.  Mythili Prakash was invited to perform at the inaugural session of the Music Academy's Festival Season in December, 2001.  Viji Prakash won the Best Guru award of the Madras Music Academy for 2000.
