A virtuoso in this ancient classical dance form, Viji Prakash is an internationally acclaimed dancer, choreographer, and teacher of Bharata Natyam. Her dynamic stage presence, her rhythmic command over the complex foot patterns and striking facial expressions bring to life the beauty and grandeur of this art form. She has had intensive training from an early age with the grand masters of the Tanjavur tradition of Bharata Natyam, Guru Kalyanasundaram and Guru Mahalingam Pillai, Directors of the Sri Raja Rajeshwari Bharata Natya Kala Mandir, Bombay.
Viji has performed and toured extensively in the United States, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Japan and Thailand. Her choreographic works include the Los Angeles Festival's Sons of Kunti at the Wadsworth Theater, the musical Purandharadasa and Meera at the Terrace Theater, Long Beach Convention Center, Manifestations of Shakti at the Japan America Theater, Dance of the Immortals at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, the nation wide tours of Meera in 1993 and Shyama in 1997.
Her choreographic works , Shiva-Shakti, Sant Meera and Prince to Buddha - Journey to enlightenment toured the US during the Fall of 2006 and 2005 respectively. Earlier these productions (Sant Meera and Prince to Buddha) also toured the US in 2004 including performances at the Lincoln Center and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) and received much acclaim. The Bhagvad Gita, which toured the US and Canada in 2002 and 2003 has received much acclaim from critics and connoisseurs alike. University of Southern California, Los Angeles,(USC)has commissioned her to stage a revised version of Bhagvad Gita at the Bovard Auditorium, USC, on March 22, 2007
Her newest choreographic dance ballet Shiva-Shakti has been commissioned to be presented at the United Nations. Following this the production will tour the USA. Dates are still available for this wonderful dance ballet. Interested organizers may please contact Shakti.
Viji is the founder & director of the Shakti School of Bharata Natyam, and its performing affiliate-the Shakti Dance Company. Viji has trained hundreds of students in the field of Bharata Natyam at he dance institution Shakti. Some of Viji's desciples are leading dancers and dance teachers in the field. Her desciple and daughter Mythili Prakash is a leading dancer and a rising star in the field of Bharatanatyam. Viji received the "Best Guru" award from the Madras Music Academy, Chennai, India in 2001. A two time recipient of the Brody Choreographic fellowship, the California Arts council award and the Excellence in Arts Award of the Torrance Cultural Arts Commission, Viji is an Associate Professor of dance in World Arts & Culture, UCLA
